Error with selection looking for RA

We have a pretty simple 11d with only local (to media server) selection items. WE have no remote agent on this media server nor do we have any selections that are looking for items on other servers,

We keep getting this error:

Backup- JRESBSMAINV-79-57344-3844 - The media server was unable to connect to the Remote Agent on machine JRESBSMAIN.
The media server will use the local agent to try to complete the operation.
Remote Agent not detected on \\JRESBSMAIN.

JRESBSMAIN is the local server and also runs the BUE11d. There is no remote agent on JRESBSMAIN

We've deleted all jobs and selection lists and recreated from scratch and still get this error. What is it that BUE thinks is on another server or what selection thinks it needs a remote agent?

You need to use BE RA to do the backup even for the local media server. Make sure the RA on your backup server is running properly. You may need to repair the BE installation if needed. This link, http://support.veritas.com/docs/269175, has info on troubleshooting BE 10.x and may provide you with some info on what needs to be done.

Hi Bill:

Thank you for your response. The link you sent does not work but I will look under 10d articles and maybe I can find something.

But I do not understand. Are you saying that, even though the server that hosts the files, exchnage, sql, SharePoint services, etc (Small Business Server) in the same server that runs the BUE, we need to have a remote agent installed there to backup local files? Does that mean we need to purchase another product in addition to the BUE11d, SQL, Exchange agents?

Thanks for any help .

Yes, the RA is required on the BE media server. When you install the BE, the RA is automatically installed though. For other servers you want to backup, the RA needs to be installed on each of them too. See this link, http://support.veritas.com/docs/237500 , for more related info. As for other ones you mentioned (Exchange, SharePoint, SQL, and many more), you need to pay for the options, which there are a quite few depending on your needs.

Hi All:

Following BIN's information above, we uninstalle and reinstalled BE 11d fom scratch and of course remade the jobs and remade the selection lists. WE insured that the BUExec RA was installed on the media server (which is also the primary server and contains the files we want to back-up.

We constinue to get this error:

Job ended: Friday, February 09, 2007 at 9:03:44 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000846b - The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent. Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33899

To reiterate. There are no selections pointing to another server. All selections are local to this media server, We have licensed and are running SQL, and SharePoint Services agents.

Any advice appreciated.

It looks like you have ruled out the RA issue on your media server. With BE 11d, folks are having issues with the GRT option for backing up. Even the latest HF11 still have not resolved some of the issues the users are having. Here are a couple of the threads related to the issues:

Is there anything else using port 10000 on the media server?
