Exchange 2003 Backup

John_Whitehead

How do I backup all the files under Exchange 2003? I can't backup any of the Log, EDB, or STM files. I'm using BackupExec 9.1 with Exchange agent running on a Windows 2003 Server. I've read some Tech Documents on Symantec's web page but, they didn't help. Any help is welecomed.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,

A common question.
In your selections list, you should see the "MS Exchange Information Store". Ticking this backs up Exchange. You won't find the STM, LOG or EDB files in your flat file backup because that's not how Exchange gets backed up- it's an online database and it's backed up in its own special way.

If you need to restore Exchange, you would similarly restore the "Exchange information store".

As with anything, if you're not sure, grab last night's tape and test a restore on a test server.

Hello,

As long as you have successfully backed up the Exchange database using the
Backup Exec Agent for Exchange, you can safely restore the Exchange
database. It is not recommended to perform backup of the "Exchsrvr"
directory in the file level backup.
If Exchsrvr directory is selected in the normal file level backup, the
Backup Exec software will attempt to perform a "flat file" backup of the
Exchange database. As the database is running and the files are open,
Backup Exec will report, in the job history log, that the Exchange files
have been skipped.

Hope the above helps.
