Exchange 2003 - VSS

Hi all,

we just installed Ex2k3 on W2k3 and everything works fine, instead of my Backupjobs.

Is it true, that i have to make to Backupjobs to backup:

a. Storagegroups with BE Exchangeoption
b. Systemstate, and Filesystem with VSS

?

Not very nice. My backupjob contains more than 30 Servers. Till now i was able to make a backup of them in one job. Will these good times come now to an end ?

Any hints how to solve the problem ?! On W2k3 i do not have another possibility to backup the systemstate, i must use VSS.

Regards Timo

Hello,

In this case deselect the user data.

Modify the selection list to deselcet the user data.

Sorry but under 'Shadow Copy components' i can only select/deselect:

Com +
IIS
Registry
System Files

Servicestate
EventLogs
WMI

No "User Data" option can be found.

Hello,

Are you referring to Storage foundation for Windows and a multi volume snapshot with VSS? If so, refer to the release notes for Backup exec 9.1, point 11. You can follow the method mentioned therin in order to conduct separate backups with VSS. The link is given below:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/261695
Are your backups giving any errors?

If the problem is not the one mentioned above, do elaborate.

No, we're using BE 9.1 with remotagents. The problem is that i do have to define two jobs for a backup on Exchange 2003. On which makes a backup of storagegropups and one of shadow copy components. See also :

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/275213.htm

Seems to be that i need to do something with becmd, which is only possible from version 10.

Hello Timo,

The article 275213 states the exact same thing that we are telling you, Exchange cannot be backed up simultaneously under user data in shadow copy components as well as under information store.

For this reason we request you to deselct the entire user data for backup.

Please refer to the following technote for the exact location of the user data:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/265159

Hi Support,

i would really like to exclude userdata on the Exchange 2003 from my backupjob, but the component "User Data" do not appear in my selectionlist. Why ?

Hello,

We would like to know whether you are backing exchange using exchange agent?

Also to further troubleshoot we would require the exact error message or the problem that you are facing?

Thanks,

Ofcourse we're using Exchangeagent.

The error message:

Initialization failed: "\\Server\Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS Snapshot-Error.

Volume does not support Shadow Copy Service. Near informations can be found in the eventlog.

Hello Timo,

Please refer to this technote. You must run the VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS command as soon as the backups fail with that error.

How to troubleshoot the error "A failure occurred querying the Writer status" (a000fed1 HEX or e000fed1 HEX) using VSSADMIN

http://support.veritas.com/docs/261993

Do let us know what the output is.
