Exchange Writer or Exchange Agent?

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the difference between Exchange Writer and Exchange Agent. We run Exchange 2003 and have both the Exchange Writer and Exchange Agent installed in BUE. Currently we are only using the Exchange Agent to back up all of our Exchange mailboxes. The Exchange Writer (Shadow Copy Components|User Data|Exchange Server|Microsoft Information Store|EXCHANGESERVER) option is not checked.

What is the difference between the writer and the agent? Can I use both and is there any advantage in doing so? Thanks.
