Does anyone know if and when Backup exec will work with a firewire device?

I would have thought that depends on the OS and the specific task you wish to perform.

I have a LaCie big disk that I use for some backup-to-disk tasks, and the only reason I use its USB connection rather than firewire is that my media server doesn't have a firewire port.

Which firewire device are you talking about specifically?

Its an Exabyte VXA-2, and Exabyte support stated that its NOT supported by Veritas. I have an Exabyte SCSI drive that I am using now but its failing. Bought the new drive, installed the firewire card, OS (Windows 2003) sees the card fine. OS Sees the Tape Backup Device fine. When I click the .exe file to install the tape device drivers Backup Exec doesnt see it.

That particular device isn't supported so you can't use it.

Hello,

USB/Firewire interfaced Tape drives" are not supported by Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 software. Where as Backup Exec does support USB/Firewire (Removable Disk) Harddrives as long as they appear as a standard drive letter in the windows explorer. For more details on supported USB drives please refer to the HCL (Hardware Compatibility list) for Backup Exec 9.x in the related knowledge base.

Refer teh following technotes:
