HELP - Hardware Error Message

Rose_Richardson
Not applicable
We recently acquired a new Gateway Server with a new version of Veritas (We previously used Version 8 with a 1 tape only drive)

It has been about 6 weeks and we have only had a handful of successful back up jobs. I have called Gateway Numerous times with each person having me check different items. The entire mechanism was replaced by Gateway at one point.

I have read various articles from your site and have noticed some items that Gateway did not have me look into. I believe I noted somewhere about not using ID6. I also noted that you recommend using Veritas Drivers for my hardware and I am using Certance Drivers. Since these suggestions were for different systems, I would rather not mess with these items without an informed recommendation regarding my system.

Please look over the information below regarding our system and the errors I received most recently.

Please provided me with some specific steps before I resort to calling Gateway again.

Thank you in advance. This is very important.

Hello,

Please refer the following technote:
The I/O device error may occur due to a read or write operation hardware
failure. The possible reason for this error is SCSI or Hardware related
issue.
Resolution:
========
Perform the following steps to resolve the issue:
1) Verify the following SCSI BIOS settings:
Set the tape drive SCSI ID as low as possible, avoiding 0 or 1, which
are usually reserved for bootable devices.
Set INITIATE SYNC NEGOTIATION for the SCSI ID of the
tape drive to off
Set INITIATE WIDE NEGOTIATION to off for controllers
with a wide bus
Set MAXIMUM SYNC TRANSFER RATE to the lowest possible
value for the SCSI ID of the tape drive
DISCONNECT must be enabled for all tape drive SCSI ID's
Set SCSI PARITY CHECKING to off
* WARNING:
The Parity Checking adjustment is for diagnostic use only and should never
be left disabled during production backups! Read the detailed explanation!
VERITAS Software can not be held liable for data corruption due to parity
checking being disabled.
2) Reduce the total number of devices on the controller.
3) Update the SCSI Controller Driver and firmware
4) Update the Tape Drive firmware
5) Separate the tape device from a controller which also has hard drives
connected to it.
6) Check the Windows NT/2000 System and Application Event Logs for
warnings/errors. Event ID 7, 9, 11, & 15 in the System Event Log usually
indicates that there is a hardware problem

Also install the latest Veritas device drivers.
