Help Updating VERITAS 9.1 --> SP1

Hello,

I recently took over network administration duties at the company i work for, and am in the process of patching our servers so that we are up to date. I recently found out about Hotfix 68 - Backup Exec (Buffer overflow creates a security hole in Agent Browser) , which requires that I have SP1 installed before I can install it.

I currently have a backup media server set up with 6 other networked computers running the Remote Backup Agent, and an additional computer running the Exchange Agent. What exactly would be the steps I need to take to update everything, (including the agents)?

From what I can tell, I should run the SP1 update file, and then the Hotfix 40 file, and then reinstall the agents on each machine. Can I just redeploy them via the Add/Remove programs method on the Media Server? Or will I need to uninstall the running agent and then redeploy?

I'm concerned that if I do this incorrectly, I could lose my configuration / licensing information. Is there anyone that might be able to walk me through this process? I would be very grateful if someone would be able to help me out.

Thanks,
Charlie

1. The patches can be installed consecutively. But, if some patch requires some other patch to be installed before it's installation, then you need to install the first patch and then reboot (if necessary). However, it is recommended to reboot the media server after the installation of any patch. It seems that you are already using Backup Exec v9.1 4691.1 with SP1 ( that comprises of all the latest patches and hotfixes )

2. Hotfixes and Service packs needs to be applied on Media server only.

3. After applying hotfixes or service pack you need to reinstall the remote agents.

* Check the following link to install remote agent. You will be able to uninstall the remote agent by using Add remove program.

Is there any trick to reinstalling the Exchange agent? At the moment when I go into the Add/Remove programs on the Media Server, there is no option to deploy the exchange agent. Is this because we only have one license to use it, and it is already in place? If so, how do I reclaim that license for reuse?

Just one more thing to add. As far as I can tell, I do not have SP1 installed. I asked the former sys admin, and he said he hadn't installed it, and I also followed the directions at: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/267690.htm to check to see if SP1 has been applied.

This could be quite the process, because I'm going to have to take down our domain controller, and Exchange server at some point to reinstall the agents.
