How does remote agent work with backup exec?

How does remote agent work with backup exec? Do I have to run an additional scsi cable to my tape drive or does it backup through the network connections of the server that backup exec is running on? Also if I am running backup exec 11.5 and purchase the latest agent will it run on my version?

Remote Agent on media server:                               

All data access (since v9.0) is accomplished via the Remote Agent, so you will see the RemoteAgent service running on your media server after the initial install

To connect to any remote machines, you need to install the remote agent code on them, and a remote agent serial on the media server   Once the serial and code are properly installed, you can backup remote machines over the network
