How to append daily backup jobs to the same tape.

Hi

Weve recently upgraded our hardware (server and tape drive). We can now put more data onto one tape.

We are now using LTO 5 tapes. (3TB)

EG:

I want to do a weeks daily backups on one tape and name the tape Daily - Week 1 etc.

However when I try and configure the backup job with all the necessary settings it tells me the tape is overwrite protected.

Breakdown of backup jobs:

Daily - consists of:

Daily Differentials (Media on server that was updated)

Daily Apps (Full backup of our applications database daily)

Lotus Notes server (Backup of lotus notes database daily)

These jobs all fit one SDLT tape (300GB) with space left on the tabe.

Im sure with our new tapes we can squeeze more daily backups on tape.

I just need to know how to configure it correctly.

You need to configure the Media Set properties (Append perion and Overwrite Period) in a way that your entire weeks job can be written to the same tape. Eg - Append - 5 days (Mon- Fri) Overwrite protection - As per your policy (minimum 5 days). Set the jobs to Append to Media and use the same Media Set on the jobs that you want to use the tape.

Create a media set and set the OPP to whatever length of time that you want to keep the tape.  Set the AP to 6 days.

For your jobs, you must designate one job as the first job of the week and this job specify overwrite.  The rest of the jobs for the week would specify append.
