LTO tape

Hello all.

My backup job failed and I found out that my 400GB LTO tape "has" 35GB capacity.
How I can change the property of the tape? I tried new tape and it shows 35gb capacity also.
I upgraded server from 2000 to 2003.
Using BackupExec 10d.
Drive is IBM Ultrium TD3

Any ideas?
Thank you in advance

You are lloking at the value 'total capacity' not 'used capacity' correct?

From the media tab, when you click on the tape is the media type identified as "LTO" ?

Sometimes total capacity is based on historical usage. Attempt a backup that you know will fill the tape (400Gb) and see what happens.

Yes, it is total capacity.
My last backup failed as there was not enough room to back up :(
I will try it this night again...

Sam.

That happened it to me too.
I just couldn't work out why but after I tried different drivers (Media Drive Vendors's and Veritas's) it finally worked out fine.

I assume you are keeping up with drive firmware.

Hi Sam,

As suggested earliar please run a backup job atleast more 35GB
Also erase the tape once and run a 100GB job
Update device drivers and firmware also

Update us on the same

Thank you

Well, I tried to backup regardless of test run failed. Now, when I go the tape properties it reads:
Used capacity : 292gb
Available capacity: 17.5 gb
total capacity:35.5 gb
compession ratio: 16.2:1
Bytes written 300GB
Bytes read: 293 gb, etc
So, even 300+gb were written it still thinks that only capcity this tape has is 35.5gb.

How I can reformat the tape?
P.S. The drivers were updated from manufacturer and Veritas.
I will update firmware right now

Thank you guys

Hello,

-- You can format a tape only if it is supported by your Device

-- You can perform a quick erase on the tape.

Kindly refer the following Document for the same:

What is a quick erase / long erase and when should it be carried out?

Thank You,
