Setup WAS

HP Proliant 570
Windows 2000 SP4 + updates
Adaptec 29160 card with latest firmware and drivers
External HP LTO1 drive with Veritas drivers
BE10 with all applicable patches

All worked fine

Now changed drive for a external HP Ultrium 448 drive with Veritas drivers.

Same backup scripts etc etc

Adaptec on SCSI 7 with default settings
LTO2 on SCSI 3
No other devices on this card

As per support doc 191158
Setting of Initiate wide negotiation and sync nogotiation unknown. Ditto with max sync transfer rate. Should this really be set to the lowest possible setting?

All drivers removed and reinstalled using latest Veritas tape driver download.

Drive has been replaced as has the external Adaptec SCSI cable

After about an hour, the backup will fail with a

Hello,

Please check if your new Drive is supported by Veritas:
Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers Standalone Drives Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/274347.htm

Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers Robotic Library Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) (includes tested drives) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/274348.htm

- If it states as Compatible please use OEM drivers.
- If it states as Tested Please reinstall the Veritas latest Drivers:
ERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 10.0 - Device Driver Installer (20050531) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20050115) and Robotic Library Release (46) (Intel Only)

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/277477.htm

It looks as if it is a Hradware Problem.

It might be tape drive firmware. Go to HP's website and download their latest Library & Tape Tools (L&TT) utility, and check the drive firmware. Be sure to stop all Backup Exec services while runninhg the L&TT utility. If the firmware is upgrade, you'll need to unistall/reinstall drivers again.

Still the same problem after abouyt 1hr, its falls over.

Eev thought I reduced the max speed etc ec

However, if I run the backup on the LTO1, it all runs perfectly.

The Device guide shows the Ulltrium 448 as working with Veritas.

Where to now?

Hello,

Just check for 9's and 11's in the system event logs. They point to hardware errors. Please refer to the following article on how to resolve such errors.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314093

Also try installing the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) drivers instead of Veritas drivers and check how it behaves.
