LTO6 now identified as CleaningTapes

Symantec Be2012

Windows & Symantec on the same patchlevel

We had to update firmware on tape-drive and tapelibrary, cause we changed 1 tapedriv and overland told us not to run mixed firmware. Now be2012 is puzzling us, cause it shows the exitistings lto6 tapes as cleaning tapes. Adding new tapes with following labels, it works. The webgui of the tapelibrary identifies them right, but be2012 is not able to do so. Can't move/retire cleaning tapes. Any idea what happened?

Solution:

-) each single tape an inventory run (recieves location & capacity again)

-) move each to its corresponding media-set matching the backupset on the tape

-) delete all tapes in the cleaning media-set

-) delete all tapes in the Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup media-set

Thanks, but we just had to change 1 out of 3 drives and updated the firmware of the tape-lib and the drives. After restart, we had no more tapes in the daily media set, so we ran an inventory with the result of a lot more cleaning-tapes. Barcode rules were not changed either. All LTO6-tapes were also move into Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup Media, but with no location and no capacity.

Tapes were in daily use and worked fine before, bad tapes are normally marked and removed immediatly.

You might want to re-install the tape library. 1) Delete the library from BE 2) Stop the media server and the library 3) Start the tape library 4) Start the media server 5) Ensure that the library and tape drive is recognised and functioning correctly in the Windows Device Manager. The library should appear as an Unknown Medium Changer with a Microsoft driver and the tape drive should have a Symantec driver. 6) Target your existing jobs to another device, save them and then target them to the new take library. 7) Try again.

2) & 3) & 4) already done

4) tapelib 0 unkown media changer & microsoft driver

4) drives with same symantec drivers

Strange thing is:

showing as cleaning tape, it still can be inventoried and that's what i did and now this tape appears ind Backup and Windows NT Backup media set with location and capacity. Will try the other tapes as well and move them manually to the right media-set. Afterwards reboot both (lib & server), run an inventory and see whta the result ist.
