MSL6030 - Slow throughput

Hello,
I do not think the problem is the hardware as I have just replaced the drive. I am using veritas 9.1 on an Windows 2003 server, file share.
I used to get 500 MB throughput, but now it is 50MB throughput, and considering the size of the backup jobs, 2 Tera byte, it is a little slow.
HP have sent me a new drive, I have upgraded all the firmware, I have not changed the cables yet, but that is next, but I find it hard to believe that with nothing changed the throughput can drop that much.

Anyone with any ideas?

Hello,

For an explaination as to why the backup operations may take a long time, please go through the following technotes:
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/231488.htm

There are many causes which result in the backup taking a long time to complete. To resolve the issue we would suggest you to go through the following links:
What VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) settings can be modified to reduce the amount of time it takes for a backup to run?
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/249090.htm

How to correct slow backup performance, slow virus or pre-How to correct slow backup performance, slow virus or pre-job scans, and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows NT,Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 server partitions http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/237444.htm

Also make sure that the anti virus programmes and any third party softwares are not running during the backup job operation.

Regards

Worth a shot, but I had read all that before asking the question. The system has been running fine with 500MB throughput, but then the drive and hardware went nuts.
HP did not provide much help other than providing a replacement drive, when swapped out the hardware tests ok, but the throughput is 50MB if I am lucky.

I am going to try a re-start and re-apply the veritas drivers.

Hello,

Please do a backup to disk and revert with the throughput data in that backup.

To explain, the File Server is Half files and Half backup to Disk from Client machines.
The Backup to disk gets 300MB a second, ever a problem, and any Backup to Disk I do gets about the same.

So far I have 1.3 Terabytes backed up in 170 Hours. Because I can not wait for HP to respond in regards to the hardware I have to allow this backup to complete, about 2 Terabytes, so I figure in another week I will be able to take some tapes out that are, well, usless, and start again with the hardware. The Tape Drive has been replaced, the cables will be replaced. All SCSI info and details check out.
Just Slow Progress and No Help from any support it seems.

Hello William,

Check if there are any event log entries indicating scsi timeouts or errors from the scsi controller drivers?
Check for evt ids 5,7,9,11,15 in system event log:

From the Devices Tab, right click the drive\Prperties

What are the settings for block size, buffer size and number of buffers?

If is isn't already, set the block size as large as it will go, and the buffer size to twice the block size or 128K, and number of buffers to 10Message was edited by:
