Media/OPP/AP rotation question

Kent_C

Hi All,
Simple question, I think, however I clearly do not understand it, nor can I find a simple answer, so here goes:

My Setup:

A LTO5 auto-loader w/ 20 tapes

3 Media Sets:
Daily, 1 WK OPP/AP, 4 Tapes
Weekly, 5 WK OPP/AP, 4 Tapes
Monthly, 1 YR OPP/AP, 12 Tapes

3 Backup Jobs:
Daily (Mon-Thurs), INCR, using daily media set
Weekly (Fridays), FULL, using weekly media set
Monthly (Last Saturday), FULL, using monthly media set

What's happening is Monday's backup (say 20/08/2012) goes through, then Tuesday's backup (21/08/2012) uses the same tape, shouldn't it switch to the next (Tuesday) tape? Or am I thinking about this completely the wrong way? Should I set the AP to 1 hour instead so the tapes are not appendable? Because the first tape (Monday) is appendable until 27/08/2012 and presumably why it wants to continue using that tape until it's full?

I'm confused and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you want every job to write to another tape, you should specify overwrite in your job and not append, then when your job starts, it will look for overwritable tapes.  As another protection against appending to your tapes, you should specify a short AP like 1 hour, as you have suggested.  This will mean that the tape is not appendable 1 hour after it is overwritten.
