Media Server and Remote agent

We have a media server running BE 2010 R2.  It has iSCSI (EqualLogic) volumes attached to it.  Sometimes when backing up these volumes I get an error message about the remote agent and I find that the remote agent has stopped working on the media server.  I thought you did not need a remote agent on the media server to backup what is basically a local drive.  Can someone clarify this for me?

Thanks!

Remote agent is by default installed on the Media server during the installation of Backup Exec. It is surely required to backup the local drives also. If the Remote agent service is not started on the Media server then BE will not work and will not be able to detect the local drives for the backups.

During the backups if the backups are failing on the local resources check of the Remote agent service is crashing on the Media server when the job fails. Also you can check the Event viewer to get more details on error with which the Remote Agent service is crashing.

Thanks,
