Migrating Backup Exec 10 to new server

Hello All -

I have recently been assigned the task of moving our BE software to a new server. So I'm looking at finding out what the best solution for moving this software to that new server is. Also, BE is currently running it's database on MSDE and I have toyed around with the possiblity of moving the database to our SQL 2000 server as well. I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was walkthrough for this procedure and/or how hard it would be to attach the database to our SQL server.

Current Server: Win2k
New Server: Win2k3

Thanks!
Keith

See http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/268315.htm

You probably also need to grab the \Data directory (for the job logs) and the \Catalogs dir. See http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/272886.htm to force BackupExec to reindex the catalogs after restoring them to the new server

Ken -

Thank you for the reply. I forgot about reindexing the catalogs. I found in this article...

http://support.veritas.com/docs/275658

basically how to move the database to another server. So my question is, if I was to follow these instructions to move the BE database to our SQL Server, then install go to the new server, then install BE, then connect to our SQL database and reindex the catalogs. Do you think that would an easier solution or am I way off base and that's not how to do it at all?

Thanks!

Keith

Sounds like that should work, but I prefer to leave BackupExec in an MSDE database rather than an MSSQL database.

In the case of a Disaster Recovery I'd just reinstall the OS, then Backup Exec, restore the latest \Catalogs dir and BEDB.Bak and start restoring, rather than having to recover MSSQL as well

Well I went ahead and moved the database to the SQL Server prior to receiving your response. During the install I opted to try and use the SQL Server, but it says one already exists. So I installed it using the MSDE. Any idea now that I have it installed how I can reattach to the SQL database?

I'm still looking for any information on how I can reconnect to the SQL database from the new server. Any help would be great. Thanks!
