Hi All,

I have Symantec Backup EXEC 2010 R3 Small Business Server running on a Windows 2008 SBS Virtual Machine.I am planning to create a new VM

with Windows 2008 SBS & install Symantec Backup EXEC 2010 R3 Small Business Server on it.

Please help me to properly do the migration.

Also I want to know the differences between Symantec Backup EXEC 2010 Small Business Server  & Symantec Backup EXEC 2010 ??

Thanks.

Seriously? NFR is for INTERNAL use...ie. you have a lab on your laptop or at work etc. where you will work with the application, not for rolling out at a client. THey need to either use the 60-day trial to decide whether or not to use the application going-forward, or buy it.

You're going to be breaking the licensing agreement...

Hey Cool,

The following doc should assist you in the proper migration from one server to the next ..

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67768

And as far as the differences in 2010 and 2010 SBS is the licensing ... take a look at the post by Sush in the thread below

Note that Symantec does not recommend the use of a VM for the media server.  By using a VM as a media server, you would be running an alternative configuration with all its attendant problems.  See Colin Weaver's comment in this discussion and the document referred.

Hi donald,

Thanks for the response.

After reading about the licensing i think the BACKUP EXEC SBS version is gonna create trouble.

My current architecture:

1 Windows 2008 R2 VM  ----- (VM1)

1 Windows 2008 SBS VM (Exchange,AD,SQL Server & Symantec BExec SBS installed) ----(VM2)

My plan is:

To migrate the Symantec BExec SBS (on VM2)  into a 3rd Windows 2008 SBS VM ..(VM3)

& then take backup of files, exchange,SQL Server which are found on  VM1 & VM2.

The reason for doing this is to remove the VMDirectPath (For tape drive) which is configured on VM2 & put it on VM3. (The VMDirectPath  is currently preventing me from taking SNAPSHOTS of VM2)

Kindly advise if this is possible. Please send me your suggestions as well to solve this issue.Thanks.

1. Can we install Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Small Business Edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 ?

2. Where can I download a trial version of Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Small Business Edition ? I need same version so that I can do my tests & simulate same environment as my client.

1) Only if the Server 2008 is the SBS edition.

2) You can download the BE 2010 R3 trial from

http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

The small business edition is a licencing package and it is the licence key that makes it as such.  You can try out the entire BE 2010.   There is no such thing as a SBE trial.

Hi pkh,

you mean to say that BE 2010 R3 & BE 2010 R3 SBS are the same product ? It depends on the license you put ??

Yes. Depending on the licence, you get different capabilities.

I guess you did not read my previous post

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/migrating-symantec-backup-exec-2010-r3-sbs-installati...

that you should not be using a VM for a media server.

hi pkh.

i had read this post..but currently their system is using this configuration without any issue.

The BE on the vm can properly see the tape drive on the ESXi host..they have not complained about any

backup issues.

Yes...and you'd be breaking the terms of an NFR license at the same time, so don't use it.

Thanks!
