I had a problem w/ the task pane too, finally I got Symantec tech support to fix it. I am posting the solution wherever I can, so others can quickly fix it.
At command prompt:
1. naviagte to C:\Windows\System32
2. type: regsvr32 msxml.dll
3. type: regsvr32 msxml1.dll
4. type: regsvr32 msxml2.dll
5. type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll
6. type: regsvr32 msxml4.dll
7. reboot
for me, the mssml1.dll failed, all others were sucessful. this fixed the problem on my pc.
