Hi,
Is there anything that I need to know when performing the inline upgrade of Backup Exec 2012 to Backup Exec 15 inline ?
The existing database of Backup Exec 2012 SP4 is on SQL_Server_Express Edition
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.5000.00 (Intel X86)
Dec 10 2010 10:56:29 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
which will be out of support next year.
Does the new installation of Backup exec 15 can upgrade the SQL Server Express edition into the latest SQL Server Express 2012 edition ?

Not sure what version of SQL is being used by BE 15, but rest assured that any upgrade would be taken care off.

BE 15 uses SQL 2008 R2 SP2 for its default SQL instance and the upgrade installer will upgrade the SQL instance from 2005 to this version.
If you want to use SQL 2012, then you'll have to manually upgrade the SQL instance. And you'll have to check with the 3rd party application if the SQL upgrade will cause any issues or not as the SQl 2005 existing files will be upgraded.

The DB will be automatically upgraded to the version of SQL shipped with BE 15 which is SQL 2008 R2 SP2, not SQL 2012.
The DB outside of BE will not be deleted.

ok, so in this case if the SQL Server that is used by the current Backup Exec 2012 SP4 is still on SQL Server Express 2005 edition, does the database will be upgraded automatically or will it stay on the old SQL Express 2005 edition ?
Because this SQL Express edition is also used by another 3rd party application so I need to know what will be the effect during the upgrade ?
BKPSRV01 Instance: BKUPEXEC Database: BEDB, ApplicationServerReporting Version: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (32-bit) - 9.00.5000.00 Collation: Latin1_General_CI_AS

ok, so with the existing SQL Server Express Edition it will be automatically upgraded by Backup Exec during the inline upgrade. Therefore I do not need to worry about migrating the existing BEDB to another SQL Server 2012 Express Edition ?
what about the other database outside the BEDB ? would that be deleted or dropped during the upgrade process ?

Thanks VJ, if I install SQL Server 2012 Express Edition manually and migrate the database before the upgrade, would that be still supported by Symantec ?
Shall I do it before or after the upgrade process ?

You can migrate the database using BEutility post the upgrade. Before the upgrade wouldn't work since BE 2012 doesn't support SQL 2012 for its BEDB.

ok, so after it is successfully upgraded to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition.
Cool, so BE 15 is now support SQL Serve 2012 Express Edition.

Yes, BE 15 supports SQL 2012 for its BEDB
