I have been receiving this message on multiple backup jobs. We have tried deleating the drive and reinstalling but now we can't see the drive at all. It isn't even being recognized by the wizard. I also can't see the media or ever have been able to.

I appreciate any help on the subject. Thank you in advance.

if you load the mfg drivers from Win2000, does the OS see the drive?

If not, you probably have a bad drive
Also
Check cables and terminators
Try a different SCSI controller

Hi,

The tape device you have deployed is currently not listed in the hardware compatibility list of Backup Exec. Link for the HCL:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/274347
If the Windows OS does not detect a tape device, Backup Exec may not be able to work with it. Check in the Windows Device Manager if this tape drive is listed as online. If it is detected fine by the OS refer the following:

In case you have installed device drivers from VERITAS for this tape drive, please uninstall them using the tapeinst.exe in the path VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT on the installation drive of Backup Exec on the Media Server. Choose the option in the tapeinst.exe to "completely remove" the VERITAS drivers. Restart the server after this. Install drivers from the Original Equipment Manufacturer or from Microsoft for this tape device, and verify the results.

General tips for detection of the device: It is also a good idea to check the SCSI ID of the device. Tape devices and media changers are best connected to SCSI target ID's between 2-5. SCSI ID's 0,1 are suitable for bootable drives.

Hope this helps.

We restarted the server. We could not find the device using Windows 2000 Server. I went to "Add a device" and found the name of the device and proceeded to install the factory drivers. Still Veritas could not recognize the existence of the tape drive. Thank you for all the help up until this point.

Hi,

If now the OS can recognize and detect the device, after having installed the OEM drivers, please restart the server once again and then in Backup Exec run the Device Configuration wizard. Also ensure that while doing backups the removable storage service has been stopped and deactivated.

Note that when you restart the server, you should be able to see the drive under Tape drives and the changer under Changer in Device Manager. If this is not the case, please let us know.

Run the device Configuration wizard from under Tools > Wizards.

Hope this helps.
