Hi,

I have the following setup

2x Windows 2000 Servers
1 x SQL 2000 running on one of the server
60 x Users

One of the the server will only backup files
The other with SQL will need to backup the database
I need to unattended, incremental backup of user pst files, my document folder, and others slected folders.

All these will backup to a NAS

What do I need?

Hi,

If you wish to deploy backup exec, you would need to install BE on 1 of these servers and install remote agent on another servers. You also need to purchase additional SQL Agent license. Incremental backups of psts are possible using DLO option, which is a add-on. For additional information refer these links:

For detailed information on cost of the update and licensing please contact our sales department. Please refer to the following links:

Hope you can clarify

1) BE 10 will be installed in the file server
2) A SQL agent will be installed in the server with sql. I heard that sql agent comes with remote agent
3) Open File agent to be install in file server with be10
4) 60 licenses of DLO

Can I set BE10 to backup all the above directly into the NAS? Eg Treat NAS as a Tape Drive

Hi Vincent,

1) Yes, BE 10 will be installed in the file server.

2) Remote Agent comes with SQL Agent.

3) Yes, Open File Agent should be installed in file server with BE 10 and as well
as on remote SQL.

4) For licenses, you need to contact our sales department.

5) Check the OS Compatibility on NAS.

6) Create Backup to disk folder on NAS.

Thanks.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/247059 : - I am not able to access this

If I just want to backup the sql database, do I need the open files for the sql sever?

I might be completely incorrect here, but then I will hear it eventually.

Server 1 = File Server. This server will run BE (1 license BE 10d).
Server 2 = SQL Server. This server will run Agents (1 RAWS Agent + 1 SQL Agent).
60 PC's: This would require 6 DLO packs as there are 10 licenses in 1 pack.

Of course you need to contact either your reseller or Symantec store for prices.

OFO is optional but not required. But buying 1 OFO will protect both servers.

DLO is optional also

You can just install the RemoteAgent locally on the workstations that you want to backup. Won't have all the bells and whistles of DLO, but will still enable you to restore one if it dies.

To summaries;

1 x BE10
1 x SQL Agent
1 x Advanced Open Files Option
60 x Remote Agent or DLO

I heard from others that DLO is not so reliable. Restore may give me some problem. Is that true?

You might be interested in this - straight from the Backup Exec help file regarding using the Remote Agent on workstations:

To protect the Workstation versions of these platforms (2000 & 2003), you must install the Remote Agent on each platform; however a license is not required for systems running Windows workstation operating systems.

- if your comfortable with the level of protection, certainly saves some $$.
