We have implemented an new system in our environment. We have created a batch files to run as Pre and Post Commands. However, these jobs are not running. Anyone know what might be the problem.

If you logo on as the BackupExec Service account, do the CMD files run?

Remember that when the Pre/Post jobs run, there is no environment set, including no path, so you either need to do something like

C:
cd \Directory\Directory
executeable name or CMD file name

or include a PATH statement at the beginning of the Pre/Post CMD file

Path c:\Directory\Directory
exe name or cmd file name

We are using the administrator account of the server as the BackupExec log on account.

Also, the pre-job is entered with the path

e:\directory\prejob.bat

OK, but do all the lines in the BAT file also contain absolute paths, or are they just the commands?

Hello,

Does the batch files run succesfully when you try to run it from the command line ?

Hello Claude,

Please check the error in the backup job log. Does it say:impossible to launch the pre job command or that the system could not find the file specified or that the job could not be started.
The job could also simply be out of the time interval for some reason. We need to verify first why the job failed or did not launch.

Also could you confirm that this is a .bat file, and what it is supposed to do.
What are the options you have selected in tools>options> pre/post job commands.

Thanks for all the help.

I will need to get back to you later. I am between you and the person responsible for the Pre job.

Also it seems the Pre job is glitching the server. We have disabled the backup job to further test the Pre job. We have changed the command lines in the Pre jhob to include full paths.

Once we have tested from various points of view, we will get back in touch with you.

We have changed all of the commands in the batch file to be full paths, no variable paths.

An error message we get is as follows:

Error: Could not start Pre Job Command < \\gain2\new volume\gainexport\export.bat >. Error (5): Access is denied.

The question I have now is;

Which administrator account is being used to access the remote agent? We want the administrator of the remote server to manage the back up.

The administrator of the backup server does not have rights to files on the remote server.

How do we set the backup job to have the admin of the remote server run the Pre/Post jobs?

Claude

Our Pre and Post commands continue to fail.

We set up some test batch files on another server to copy a *.txt file from one directory and it too failed.

Any suggestions, or are you going to leave us hanging and shopping for an alternate backup software?

Hello Claude,

You cannot have the backup exec service account to have administrative rights only on one of the servers. For the pre/post commands to run successfully as well as the job to succeed the backup exec service account and the account that you use in the backup job properties has to have administrative rights on BOTH the backup exec server and the server on which you are running the pre/post job commands.

Ideally we advice you to give the backup account domain admin rights.

Did not solve the problem.

Hello,

Ensure that the administartor is a part of only Domain Admin group. Please remove it from any other groups. This as the error indicates is a permission issue.

Another alternative is to place the batch file in "c:\program files\veritas\backup exec\nt" folder and do not mention any path in the pre- command window.

Do revert with the results.
