Problems with Backup Exec 10d and HP Ultrium 448

We have a client with an Ultrium 448 drive which appears to be constantly resetting itself when Backup Exec 10d is installed.

The drive is listed as tested under the compatibility matrix, and has been working fine under Backup Exec 10.0 as well as HP's Library & Tape Tools, and under ntbackup.

This has occurred now on a Dell Poweredge server running Windows 2000 Server, a HP Vectra running windows 2000 professional, and a Dell XPS workstation running XP. Attached at various times to an Adaptec 29160, a Dell PERC and an LSI u160 SCSI adapter.

I've tried the driver update for Backup Exec, and the drive is at the latest firmware from the HP website.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

- Do you receive any alerts?

- Do you receive any event ids in the event logs?

Hi,

There were no alerts, and no obvious event log entries. Any attempt to access the drive will eventually timeout. This unit is on a client site, and access must be arranged in advance, so confirming this will be delayed

Hello,

- Try stopping an deactivating the RSM Service.
- Also can you please explain what you mean by resetting the drive?

Hi

The same symptoms occur with RSM enabled and disabled. The drive's led's all flash on momentarily every 10-15 seconds, according to HP's support site this indicates a reset of the drive. This has been observed consistently when attempting to access media, but not when backup exec 10d is uninstalled and access is through ntbackup, nor when accessing from within backup exec 10.0.

Hi,

Try installing the HP drivers for the drive and verify if the same problem reoccurs...
