Problems with daily backup

jering
Level 3
OS: Windows Small Business Server 2003 w/SP1
Application: Backupexec for Windows server 9.1 w/SP4

You can see screenshots of the errors here:
http://www.jan-egil.net/backup

As you can see it fails on different times, on some days the backup is almost complete when it fails, and other days it can be 0 bytes written.

Since the problem started we have tried the following:
-Upgraded to latest firmware on the backupdevice
-Upgraded to latest servicepack on Backupexec
-Repaired the Backupexec-installation (Add/remove programs, Change, Repair)
-Renamed the "Catalogs"-folder so it was re-created
-Restarted the server and the backup device

The backupdevice was bought for about a month ago because the old on failed.
Also the tapes are brand new.

Before we used the "Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available", but yesterday I tried to set it to "Overwrite media", but it made no difference.

I`m beginning to get out of ideas on what to try now, so I really would appreciate some suggestions regarding this issue.

Hello,

Are you backing up local server or is it a remote server?

Are you getting this problem while backing up databases like exchange or SQL?

What are the errors in the event logs?

NOTE : If we do not receive your reply within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answered and would be moved to answered questions pool.

Hi

It`s a local server.
Both Exchange and SQL.

The errors are shown on the screenshots at www.jan-egil.net/backup

Hello,

Refer to the following technotes:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/246967
http://support.veritas.com/docs/240947

If the issue persiste, try the steps below:
- take a backup on a backup to disk folder and verify the results
- In the schedule tab time window, you have specified 23:00 as the start time and 23:59 in the not later then windows. Try increasing that time, eg. you can put 02:00 in that windows or 21:00 which refer to 21:00 the next day. This might help.

Revert if the issue persists.

So I`m starting to wonder if it could be a hardware-related problem...

Hello Jan,
If NTBackup is giving an Hardware Error this is mostly a Hardware issue.

Please check for Hardware errors (7,9,11,15) in your System logs.

Thanks
Regards.

Should I just buy a new SCSI-controller and see if it corrects the problem?
