Quantum DLT-V4 tape drive support

I have a customer with Backup Exec Small Business v9.1 who has acquired a new Quantum DLT-V4 tape drive. Neither Quantum nor Symantec appears to have a driver for this tape device and this version of BE.

Is this true or am I just not finding it?

How do we support this drive, or do we need to purchase and install a new version of BE?

If you have verified the drive is listed in the Veritas supported devices for the version then it should be in the latest device driver package. Also check sevice pack level and patches for Veritas.

This is a fairly new drive model and all driver updates that I can find are for some level of 10.x, not 9.1

I suspect that they have to buy a new version of BE or some other tape software, or that someone at Symantec knows of a driver that is not obvious.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Mike,

If your device is not listed on the HCL, unfortunately Veritas will not support it, nor offer a drive. In fact, the 9.1 HCL has been stagnant for some time and many people are reporting their newer drives require the newer Version of BE.

You can try however...

1. Stop all BE services
2. Install the device using OEM drivers
3. Make sure it works with ntbackup. Your tape manufacturer should be able to help you get at least to here
4. Run tapeinst.exe and select the "do not install Veritas drivers"
5. Start BE services.

Hello Mike,

Please note that if your device is listed in the compatibility list and it is tested then you can use the Veritas drivers.

Please refer the following link:

Looks like we will be forced to buy a new copy of Backup Exec v10, or having reached this point perhaps evaluate other backup vendor solutions.

Hello,

Please check whether the device is compatible withversion 10, if yes you can upgrade to 10.1.

Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers (tm) 10d (10.1) Hardware Compatibility List. Includes HCL information for supported drives, libraries, virtual tape devices, fibre-channel HBAs, switches, routers/bridges, and iSCSI components. For printing purposes, the latest version of Acrobat is recommended.
