Remote Agent Not detected

Barnabus86
Level 3

Getting a job failed with the error Remote Agent Not detected (Backup Exec 2010 R3).

Have reinstalled the remote agent on the remote server, but still getting the same result. When i try to browse to the server through a selection list I am able to see the server but unable to select anything (shows as none).

Can telnet via port 10000 from the Backup exec server to the remote host.

On the remote host if I open the remote agent utility I notice that there is nothing under the security tab. I then tried going back onto the backup server and selecting 'Establist Trust Relationship'. I had no errors while doing this, but still nothing appeared.

My next step was to enable debugging and check the log file. I have attached this below. Any further ideas?

Hi There though you have mention that telnet is working I don't see control connection established between media server and remote server so please ensure firewall is disabled between both the server and also telnet is working both way Thanks

I am able to telnet from the media server to the client, but not the other way. As the servers are on different vlans they are going through our ISA box, so i suspect there is a rule on there preventing the remote server from being able to telnet to the media server.

One of the other servers on the same vlan is also unable to telnet to the media server, but that server is backing up fine. It is also showing a trust with the media server in the remote agent utility.

Hi Thanks for the Input, what you can check in that case is disable remote agent service on that server and see at least you can see shares of that server from media server. To see at least media server is able to connect to remote server as from above logs you have gave there is no control connection as job engine from media server will establish control connection with remote agent on remote serve on port 10000 to establish control connection Thanks

I'm not sure I completely understood the last message, but I disabled the agent and was able to access any shares on the server. If i tried to telnet to that server on port 10000 with the service disabled it failed, but worked when i re enabled the service

I should also say that i have added an entry for ndmp 10000/tcp in the services file at \system32\drivers\etc

Hi Thanks good to know you are abke to acess the share and yes when you disable the remote agent telnet will fail because there is no service running on port 10000 that is remote agent .now moving back to original issue you need to check why you are not able to connect to remote server on port 10000 when remote agent service is running.

You do know that it is not only port 10000 that has to get through your ISA server?

For starters you need a range of ports for th NDMP data connection (10000 is NDMP Control)

What happens if you allow all ports from IP address of media server to get through the ISA server to the remote (just as a test)?

Also bear in mind that remote server also has to talk to Media server via port 6101 for remote agent publishing/advertising.
