Restore from D2D2T backup

We are planning to introduce a Disk-Disk-Tape backup solution using Backup Exec for a customer and I have a question about this.

How does a restore operation work in this scenario ?

Does the initial disk backup create one large backup file (as a normal disk backup would) which then gets backed up to tape ?

How would we then do a restore from tape if required ? Would we need to do a full restore of the disk backup and then restore the individual file from disk ?

Sorry if this is a stupid question

Thanks

John,

Your situation could be different depending on the d2d unit but I'm running a Cybernetics HSTC d2d2t unit and backups to this unit appear in BE exactly as they did to a tape drive. If we backup a directory on a server, that directory appears in BE just like it did when we backed up to tape and we can restore the directory or files w/in it just as we did from tape. Our disk unit allow us to offload one of the "slots" (analagous to a slot in an autoloader tape) to tape (a certance lto3 drive) and if you needed to restore whats on this archive tape, the d2d unit's software allow us to restore that tape back to the appropriate slot on the d2d unit and then we'd restore from that slot to the target server. I've tested this several times after we installed the unit and it worked very well.

The D2D backup will create one or more BKF files on the target disk drive.

If you then do a standard COPY backup of the BKF file(s), then you would need to restore them , inventory and catalog, then select the file(s) to be restored

If, however, you do a DUPLICATE backup job, BackupExec will create a copy of the backup set on tape, and you can restore directly from tape.

You can use policies to kick off the B2T job when the B2D job finishes, so it is automatic, not manual.Message was edited by:

Hello,

To add more, you can refer to the following technote to cofigure duplicate backup and try.

How to configure duplicate jobs in Backup Exec 9.x / 10.0 for Windows Servers

Thanks guys

We won't be implementing a "dedicated", specialised D2D2T solution but will re-utilizing an existing SDLT 8 slot autoloader with a new 1 or 2 Terabyte disk array, both attached to a new Windows server.

The plan would be for the daily backup to run to the disk array and then (time permitting) backed off to tape, hopefully daily as well.

I don't know if this can be done as one daily job or would need to be set up seperately.

Update to my last post.

I see that using the Duplicate job option, it can be done as one job and doesn't require seperate jobs.
