Restoring to a Virtual Machine

  • Can anyone tell  me if this is a correct statment:  To perform a "general" GRT restore of individual files and folders on guest virtual machines, the RAWS has to be installed on the guest virtual machine for the restore only (not for the backup – but be sure to have GRT enabled when doing the backup).
  •
  • If this is true, I guess it means we can just go along backing up our data w/o having the RAWS installed;  then, if we ever need to do a GRT restore, we can install the RAWS, do the restore, then uninstall it?

It depends in part on the Guest OS.

If you are running Linux you have to recover the VMDK in its entirity.

If you are running Windows you can recover individual files with the GRT technology.

This article outlines the steps and requirements:

Yes the above two statements are absolutely correct. For GRT restore of individual files and folders you need to install RAWS on the Virtual machine. Also GRT is supported only for Windows Operating System.
