Robotic Library slow to backup

Hal_Snodgrass
Not applicable
Hi,

I have replaced a DAT72 tape unit with a DAT72X6 autochanger in a HP ML350 server running SBS2003 and the backup speed of the autochanger is extremely slow compared to the standalone device.

The DAT72 will do a test backup at 240MB/min and the autochanger will do the same backup at 18MB/min.

I have had HP replace the drive but the speed showed no improvement.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a driver issue.

How to troubleshoot issues with a Robotic Library or Tape Drive in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/255501.htm

snippet:
The next step is to ensure that the latest drivers and firmware have been installed for the tape drive, robotic library, and for the SCSI controller. VERITAS drivers should be loaded to the tape drive for best performance. VERITAS Software does not test performance or compatibility with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) drivers, unless noted on the Hardware Compatibility List. Backup Exec tape drivers and robotic library drivers can be downloaded from the VERITAS Support Web site at http://support.veritas.com/rd/bews-downloads.htm . Select the appropriate Backup Exec version number in the Product Version dropdown box, and select Driver as the File Type. Contact the hardware manufacturer for the latest firmware for the robotic library, tape drive, and SCSI controller.

Hi,

- Are you also backing up remote servers? Does the performance issue occur on each backup job?

-If you are using BE v10.0 build 5484 upgrade to revision 5520 and install latest drivers. Refer these links:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/277181
http://support.veritas.com/docs/277477

-Create a B2D(Backup-to-disk) and run the backup job to B2D folder. Check the throughput rate.

- Ensure that the drivers for SCSI controller are updated.
