Because I need to mimic what customers in the field are using, I need to keep a VM server-2000 box running.
On that box I'm backing up successfully:
1) C:\ drive
2) D:\ Drive
3) The Sql instance on it
4) Utility partition
Not backing up successfully:
5) SystemState
For the last couple of weeks, everything has backed up successfully except the ststemstate. I've rebooted the server, looked at services, HD space, looked at logs. This used to work, I cannot ID any changers that would cause the SS not to back up.
Below are my error messages:
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000847c - An error occurred retrieving System State files.
The System State file could not be backed up.
Final error category: Resource Errors
V-79-57344-33916 - An error occurred retrieving System State files.
I'm stuck having to backup this server until the software we sell is no longer supported for our customers.
Any thoughts anyone?
Thank you

hi rapper36,
see if the following is applicable -
If you are using McAfee and upgraded Virus Scan to version 8.7i and are getting these errors in the job log:
The item \\SERVER_NAME\System?State\Boot Files\C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-000000000000}\CATMAST.cbd in use - skipped.
The item \\SERVER_NAME\System?State\Boot Files\C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-000000000000}\CATMAST.cbk in use - skipped.
The item \\SERVER_NAME\System?State\Boot Files\C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-000000000000}\HASHMAST.cbd in use - skipped.
The item \\SERVER_NAME\System?State\Boot Files\C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-000000000000}\HASHMAST.cbk in use - skipped.
one of the workarounds is to exclude these files from the backup
CATMAST.cbd
CATMAST.cbk
HASHMAST.cbd
HASHMAST.cbk
this is caused by Backup Exec trying to close open read only handles from VirusScan 8.7i

...have you tried to create a new job to backup JUST the System State? If it succeeds, then it could point to corruption of the selection list or job.
Thanks!

1) If you are using SEP, uninstall it. I had problems backing up Windows 2000 with SEP installed.
2) You should logon to the Windows 2000 server and use NTBackup to backup the system state. If NTBackup is unable to backup the system state, then BE will not be able to back it up.
