Shadow Copy failure

Hello,

I am having a problem backing up Shadow Copy component on a new Windows 2003 R2 x64 server. I have the x64 client installed and test backups during the day always run fine. If I backup the server during our nightly backups, it fails every time. The event logs on the remote server show the Volume Shadow Copy service starting and entering the running state:

10 seconds later, the remote agent crashes.

If I run the command vssadmin list writers, I get the following

I am not sure if the writers are waiting for completion because the agent crashed or the agent crashed due to a problem with writers. I had the same exact problem on a different x64 server as well. We decided to rebuild that as a 32 bit server for technical reasons, but I think that shows this is not a one time issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem??

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Hello Joseph,
- Have you installed the Hotfixes for the 64-bit Support?
- Please go through the following Articles:

Thank you for your reply.

I have installed the x64 version of the remote client and the patch as well (document 280701 and 2823770).

Document 278254
Windows 2003 R2 x64 is listed as a supported OS for the remote client.
Note #10 does not mention anything about shadow copy issues.
Note #15, the x64 agent is installed and patched (see document 280701 and 2823770)
Note #16, the processor is a 64-bit Xeon
Note # 18, mentions a hotfix will be delivered to support new VSS writers but no other information is given. Has that hotfix been released? If so, do you know where I can download it?

Document 280701
x64 client installed. I've also re-installed the agent with no change.

Document 281856
See note #18 under document 278254 above.

Regards,

Joe

Hi Joseph,

What data are you backing up?

Are you backing up databases?

Refer to this KBID by Microsoft:

Hope this helps!
