Shadow Copy problem

578716178
Not applicable
The below is the error I get, both at the same time when I try to backup my Domain Controller. I run BE 9.1 on Windows server 2003 and the BE runs on a server other than the domain controller. After reading through the Knowledge Base, I don't see any other situation listed such as this. I would like to know what could be causing this other than low disk space on the domain controller(there's plenty of room) or Media errors(this happens on all 8 tapes in my library).

Backup - FS1OFO: Initialization failure on: "\\FS1\Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Yes.
OFO: Snapshot error (0x17): Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

If a job created for Windows 2000 is being used to perform backup of Windows 2003 then this issue could occur because in Windows 2000 the system state is backed up separately, but in Windows 2003 the system state is a part of the Shadow Copy Components selection.

As an additional information:-

1) Title:- A backup of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 fails with the message "To fully protect Windows Server 2003, you must select Shadow Copy Components for backup" even though Shadow Copy Components were selected.

2) Title:- "To fully protect Windows Server 2003, you must select Shadow Copy Components for backup" (a000fefc HEX, e000fefc HEX, a0009419 HEX or e0009419 HEX) is reported during a backup after upgrading Backup Exec media servers or remote servers to Windows Server 2003.

Hello,

Refer to these two technotes:

"Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" (00000017 HEX) is reported in the Backup Exec job log during a failed backup/verify operation
http://support.veritas.com/docs/192216

Why is it recommended that tape devices should not be connected to RAID controllers?

The error you are receiving is when Backup Exec tries to initialize the Shadow Copy Component process for Windows to back up the available components. The components include the following if available:

System_State:\ writers which can include:
* Active Directory
* COM+ Class Database
* Cluster Database
* IIS Database
* Registry
* Boot Files and Protected Files
* SYSVOL
* Certificate Server

System Service writers, which can include:
* Removable Storage Manager
* Event Logs
* Windows Internet Name Service
* Windows Management Instrumentation
* Remote Storage
* Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
* Terminal Server Licensing
* Background Intelligent Transfer Service

See http://support.veritas.com/docs/261993 for information related to problems similar to yours. Also, there are several Shadow Copy Component patches available from MS.
