Sharepoint backup very slow on Backup Exex 2010 R3

Hi,

The backup on our sharepoint is taking a long time. I would like to seek some advise, hopefully able to reduce the backup time. Thank you.

Below are the info:

Backup Exec 2010 R3 (backup server running on Windows 2008 R2 64 bit, Intel Xeon 2.00GHz 4GB RAM)

Connected to an LTO4 autoloader via fiber.

The Sharepoint server are on WSS 3.0 (3 Sharepoint servers - Database, Apps & Web are installed with the sharepoint agent)

I'm backing up the whole sharepoint farm. The sharepoint method selected are Full Backup entire database with option using GRT & release lock on the sharepoint.

The estimate data size are 440GB, average job rate is 2400+-, the backup time is 7 hours+-

I hope there is way to reduce the current backup time as our sharepoint will be used by even more users thus the data size will definitely grow to be even larger!!

Would appreciate if you could provide some advise or suggestion. Thank you very much.

Hi there,

Is BE installed on the SharePoint server, or does it have connectivity to your SAN at all?

If BE isn't installed on your SP server, then you're using the RAWS agent, meaning that your backups are running across your LAN. This can explain slow backup speeds.

If the SP server is connected to the SAN, you can look at SAN SSO in order to utilise the library. However, this means that a full version of BE needs to be installed on your SP server, and SAN SSO licensed on your main media server. This will allow backups to run across the SAN instead of the LAN, and will speed up your backups dramatically.

If not, you can look at tuning your tape library by increasing the size of your buffers and block size (you need to do proper test restores after increasing the block size!) which may increase the speed of your backups a bit. Also look at hard-coding the NICs and switch ports for the fastest speed possible on the NICs.

Thanks!
