Slow restore process with external WD hard drive

I have an external Western Digital HD connected to my MAC OSX Server 10.2.  Whenever I perform a restore job to the drive, it runs at 8mb per minute!! 

I am using firewire connectivity.

A normal restore job to a W2K3 machine runs as normal.

Any ideas as to what can be done to restore a job to the external drive at normal speed??

veritas tech support had me make these changes to the registry when i complained of slow restores on a mac:

in 9.1 the keys are here:

local machine/software/veritas/tcpip/

in 10d:

local machine/software/veritas/network/tcpip

Handshake time changed from 78hex to 168hex
Work Buffer Size changed from 4000hex to 8000hex
Disconnect Delay changed from 2eehex to 5dchex

this gets the speed up to a respectable level but still less than half the speed of a restore to a windows box.
