I am experiencing a problem with Backup Exec. The problem is that backups from a remote server seem to run very slow unless I reboot the remote server immediately prior to the backup. My configuration is shown below:
Server 1 (Main Server):
Dell PowerEdge 2850 (dual 3.2 Xeon, 4GB RAM)
Windows 2003 Small Business Server Premium (Exchange 2003 in use)
Backup Exec 9.1 SBS Edition with Service Pack 2 installed
Dual Teamed Built-in Intel Network Cards
Dell PowerVault 122T LTO2 AutoLoader connected via. Adaptec SCSI card
Mcafee Virusscan 8.0i Anti-Virus software
Mcafee Groupshield Exchange Anti-Virus
Server 2 (File/Print and Fax Server):
Dell PowerEdge 2850 (dual 3.0 Xeon, 2GB RAM)
Windows Server 2003 Standard
Backup Exec 9.1 SP2 remote agent
GFI Faxmaker Fax Server software
Dual Teamed Built-in Intel Network Cards
Mcafee Virusscan 8.0i Anti-Virus software
The problem is that the speed of the remote backup is very slow unless I reboot server 2 immediately before the backup takes place. The throughput I achieve is around 1000MB / min if I do the backup immediately after a reboot but if I do it a few hours later or at the end of a days use (I normally run the backup at 11PM) the throughput falls to around 40MB / minute! I'm sure there must be an underlying cause but the only solution I have found so far is the reboot!
I disable the virus scanner with a Backup Exec pre-backup script on both servers. I have tried the following:
Restarting the remote agent immediately prior to the backup (no effect)
I have tried restarting the backup exec services on server 1 prior to the backup (no effect)
I have set the Network cards to Auto 1000Mbps rather than auto-negotiate (no effect)
I have told the main backup exec server which network interface it should be using under options / network (i.e. the teamed connection) - no effect
I have tried completely uninstalling and then reinstalling Backup Exec Server and agent + reapplying SP2 - this had no effect
Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks for your help
