Hi,

Kindly refer this technote and check the complete job log for the failed backup job.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/251970.htm

Can you just paste the portion of the Error (usually marked in RED font) indicated in the job log along with any exceptions. (If there are any).

It will help us understand the issue.

Also check what are the event ID's that are logged at the time of failed backup and what the error message contain.

That is the extent of the error.
There are no application or system events pertaining to backup at all.

We think it was due to lack of available disk space on the system drive. We have cleared space and got a good backup last night.

Perhaps this error has something to do with not being able to write a catalog or log file?
The error message could certainly be more informative.

There were no exceptions, but several of the backup set logs look like this:

Set type : BackupSet
status : Completed
Set description :
Resource name : \\WEB1\C$
Logon account : Web Server Administrator
Error code : fffffc68 HEX
Error description : 0xa000fc68 (2684419176)

Agent used : Yes
Advanced Open File Option used : No

Yes, all is well. It was disk space.
