We're using Backup Exec for Windows Server 10.0 Rev 5484 with a Dell server running Windows 2000 SP4 and an internal Dell DLT 40/80 drive. Recently we've begun to have trouble running our backups - rather then run at the appointed time, they just say "queued". If you inventory the tape in the drive, it is marked as "overwritable", but also "not appendable (media full)" instead of "infinite-allow append" as I would expect. Not only that, but instead of being labeled something like "DLT000018" which is the label I gave it, it will be labeled something like "Seagate 2003/10/30.04:02:16". If I try to erase it, the tape drive does nothing - but if I cancel the erase job, and stop and restart all BE services, I am able to erase it. In fact, if I just stop & restart services, then likely as not the tape will return to its normal label and append status and allow me to run my backup.
So, these are my questions: Why, when a job is set to overwrite, and my tape is marked overwritable, does the job not run, in spite of the append status? And why can't I mount tapes normally without restarting services?
I see these potential issues present right away: My research tells me that I should not have the removable storage service running with BE, is this correct? Right now this service is stuck in the "Starting" state. I've disabled it but have to restart the server to get rid of it completely. Also, I see that there's a later build of BE that I should probably install, and see if I can upgrade my device drivers too.
Any other suggestions or possible explanations for this odd behavior will be most welcome!
