Sudden Failure of Backup Server

Neil_Duffin
Level 2
Scenario: Currently backup servers across LAN using seperate servers specifically built to host Backup Exec and Autoloader.
Problem: Overnight backups cause backup server to crash at random times during the backup. The backup server has an unexpected shutdown error with no relevant event log entry to identify problem/cause. Data Server remains working with no corresponding events either. BU Server has been rebuilt; other BU Servers have been used as well but they still crash. Suspect issue with disk drives and/or NTFS file system but not sure.
Absolutely stumped as to cause! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

- What Data are you backing up?

- Is it a remote backup or a local backup?

- Are you backing up any Databases like exchange Sql?

- Do you receive any error message?

Hi,

In response to your questions:

1. File Server
2. Remote
3. No
4. Absolutely none. Nothing in event log except unexpected shutdown of the server hosting the backup software.

Hello,

Are you also backing up the Shadow Copy Components of the remote machine?

Make sure that you have updated Backup Exec v9.0 to Backup Exec v9.1. It addresses many issues and enhancements from an earlier versions and Build of Backup Exec v9.0. Refer the following technotes:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264658.htm

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/262414.htm

Note:

1. BEWS 9.1 is a free downloadable upgrade inclusive of previously installed agents and options from Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers agents and options.
2. Update all agents/options on all remote systems.

Also, Could you try running a backup with the NTbackup utility of Windows to isolate the issue?
