Synthetic backup very unstable.

Hi..

I have been working with this Synthetic backup for over month now and I just cannot understand why this thing happens.

I have 2TB SAN as B2D folder.
Created a policy which contains 3 templates;
1. Full Prime
2. Incremental Prime
3. Synthetic Prime

"Collect additional information for synthetic backup" checked on "Full Prime" and "Incremental Prime" template properties.

Created a Backup Selection List.
Created a job using above policy.

Ran "Full Prime" fine.
Ran "Incremenatl Prime" fine.
Ran "Synthetic Prime" fine.

Made some changes andcreated a new files within folder.

Ran "Incremenatl Prime" fine.
Ran "Synthetic Prime" and it is hanging on Loading media.

It is happening after every secound incremental.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks.

Is this some kind of joke....?
Or
Is this some kind of joke....!

Have they ever, I mean EVER solved a problem by giving technical support?
All I can see from this forum is giving out "go and read this or that docs"

How da hell do you expect this product to work if there are book about error codes.

Hello Henry,

We apologise for the confusion.

Could you let us know if you get any active alerts which might be waiting for a confirmation.
Some times these alerts dont pop up, instead they go under the alerts Tab and sit there waiting for a confirmation.
These could be confirmation to overwrite the given media.

Please let us know.

Amruta.

There is no alerts or waiting alerts.
Just an Information alert of database maintenance activity.

All medias are allow to overwirte and appendable

When the synthetic backup runs it writes about 428 bytes which byte count shows but stays on loading media after that.

Hello,

--- Do you have 2 standalone drives or robotic library with 2 drives in your environment?

Thank You,

Shweta

Read his original post.

He's using B2D Folders, not tape media

Like I said before.

I have two B2D folder for 'Prime Full Backup" and "Incremental Backup" on SAN.
And PowerVault 132T (Single Tape Drive Library) for Synthetic backup.

132T has the most updated firmware and the driver (Not the DELL driver, Veritas driver)

Normal backup to tape works fine (over the network or local)

Hello,

Make sure that the source device and destination device have been selected properly. If that is not done, this problem can occur.

Also check if there are any device related errors in the system event logs when this happens.

Priya.

There is no device related errors at all.
And for the synthetic backup, "All devices" is set for "Preferred source device" in "Settings" - "General"

I have tried every single devices in the Preferred source device" but still the same.

It only works if I set the synthetic to happen on B2D that is
Prime Full to B2D
Incremental to B2D
Synthetic to B2D than it works.

Hello,

Do you receive any event ids related to backup exec or the backup to disk folders in the event logs?

Thank You,

Shweta
