Tape won't compress data

I have a client that has a tape drive with a capacity of 20/40. I have compression enabled, but the tape fills up at 25GB. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Please refer to the following document:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/199542

If hardware data compression is used, then the compression is done by the tape drive. Backup Exec only sends instruction to the tape drive to do compression.

You could try using software compression.

To isolate the issue, you could try backing up with NTbackup.

Thanks, Veritas for removinig the response I left yesterday.

Jamie -

If iyou are getting 25 GB on a 20/40 tape, you ARE getting compressio at about 1.25:1. I generally figure on about 1.3:1 as a ruile of thumb. Remember that 2:1 compression is a marketing fantasy rather than an Engineering promise

See http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/199542.htm for a litle more detail on compression and what you can expect
