True Purpose of Setting "Media Type"

Many Thanks in advance for replies offered. The question we have is about Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 for Windows Servers. Specifically, we need input about setting "media type" for our DLT tape media.

We use only DLT IV tape media for backup purposes. Yet, in our media sets, each tape within each media set is specified with a media type value of "DLT".

We discovered BE9.1 also offers other apparently relevant choices for setting the media type. For example:

"DLT IV (1800 ft, 20.0 GB"
"DLT IV (1800 ft, 35.0 GB"
"DLT IV (1800 ft, 40.0 GB"

Q: Is the media type just used for documentation purposes, or does setting the media type have a practical value (one that might affect tape capacity by chance?)

As before, thanks for the replies.

The only thing that I can see that may apply u\is that you could use that field to specify what kind of drive created the tape - DLT4000, DLT7000 or DLT8000, since the type corresponds to the uncompressed capacity of those drives

If all you have is one drive, or one type, I wouldn't worry about it. Let BackupExec stick in what ever it wants to.
