Ultrium 2 LTO - Why Are My Jobs Asking For A Second Tape?

Hi All,

I have an HP ML350 with an Internal Ultrium 2 LTO 400GB Tape Drive. I have just over 300GB to back up but I am being prompted for a second tape by Backup Exec 11d...  I have tried both software and hardware compression but I get the same thing...  Any ideas? Or am I just missing something obvious as I am new to this product...  There must be a way to get the entire 400GB capacity out of the tape...

Thanks Much.
James

Hi Spoonman.
LTO2 is 200/400GBs, so the "real" capacity depends on the compression rate, and this depends on the data you are backing up.

Frustrating isn't it. Just for a benchmark, I'm averaging about 1.75 compression on a SBS system, so Exchange, SQL Server plus a little user data.

Also, the tape has to have room to hold the catalogue and the tape header info.  My LTO -2 tapes actully have about 186 gb of native capacity.

Yes - truly frustrating... My Ultrium 2 starts asking for the 2nd tape at the 186GB mark as well...  Oh well, good to know it isn't something I am missing...

Thanks for all the help guys...
