Unable to Calalog LT02 tape

Hi there,

Running BackUp Exec v10 on a Windows Server 2003 SP1.

I created a backup for Period End August 05 and i need to restore some files from it.

The Catalog for this Backup is not in the Media list, so i did an Inventory on the tape, which was successful, but when i attempt to catalog the tape it fails with the following error:

Catalog:The media for sequence number 1 in this media family has not been inventoried.
No sets on this media may be cataloged.

I have renamed the old Catalog Folder and created a new one as per the Veritas article but this made no difference.

I have also tried creating the Catalog file on a seperate drive as i had previously received the error:

CatalogNot enough free disk space for temporary catalog files.
V-79-57344-34009 - There was an error processing the on tape catalogs.
The media for sequence number 1 in this media family has not been inventoried.
No sets on this media may be cataloged

Despite there being 253Gb on the drive (the backup is 330Gb, but i am right in thinking the Catalog requires about 1Mb per 1Gb data)

The backup only spans one tape, i have tried it in another LT02 tape drive and i get the same error (both v10 on Server2003)

Can anyone help??? There is critical data that i need off of this tape by next Monday for the MD of a Company.

Many thanks

Jon

Try this-
In the media tab, find the media you're attempting to restore from, move it to the Retired media set and then delete it.
rename the \catalog folder (again) and create a new \catalogs folder. Stop & Start the BE services. Under tools -> Options -> Catalog, uncheck the box for using storage media based catalogs.
Perform the inventory, then perform the catalog again.

If catalog fails, check contents of \catalogs folder. Are there any files?

Many thanks for your help Ray.

Unfortunately i am out of the office until Monday when i can attend site to try out your resolution.

Any other suggestions people might have would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hi Ray,

My colleague tried to Catalog the tape in a different Tape Drive on our own site.

The Media would have not been our Media List here so effectively i have tried your resolution already.

This is very frustrating.

Hello,

Do you have have the number 1 tape?

If you do not have the first media in the spanned media set, it would not be possible for Backup Exec to restore the data from the other media sets.

If our understanding regarding your issue is incorrect please elaborate.

NOTE : If we do not receive your reply within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answered and would be moved to answered questions pool.

The media does not span two tapes.

The backup size is 372Gb and we use LTO2 200/400 tapes

All indications are that this is not the first tape in the backup set.
You can attempt to use MTFCheck.exe to check the media and perhaps view a report of its contents:
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/241972.htm.
I have no personal experience with this tool. Good luck.

* This Dblk is an continuation DBLK from a spawning media.

I'd say that this indicates that this is part of a multi-tape backup set.

The backup size is 372Gb and we use LTO2 200/400 tapes

This would be 1.86:1 compression - a VERY good level - I generally get bewteen 1.3-1.5

Be that as it may - If you have tried to catalog into an empty catalogs folder and have unselected "Use Media Based Catalogs", and it still tells you that the first volume is not inventoried, then BackupExec is broken, and you should probably open a trouble ticket with Veritas/Symantec. By un-selecting that option, you are telling Backup Exec to ignore anything it thinks it knows about the tape and read the data, building a new catalog as it goesMessage was edited by:

Hello Jon,
Unless this tape is part of a backup that has spanned across more than one tape, you should not have this error message. Hnce please check the backup job to check the tape used.

Admittedly i cannot 100% confirm that this job spans 2 tapes, but every back up that has ever been run for this Company spans just one tape, even now with additinal files to backup!

The tapes have been properly labelled and there is no indication that there should be a second tape.

Many thanks

I have now totally uninstalled v10 and installed from scratch version 10d.

I have attempted to Catalog this tape and i get the following error:

The media for sequence number 1 in this media family has not been inventoried.
No sets on this media may be cataloged.

Does this point to the possibility of another tape in this backup?

An urgent answer would be very helpful.

Many thanks
