Unable to do backups due to "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Problem: Backups are not starting, error under Veritas backup job log is: "Backup - C: Storage device "HP 1" reported an error on on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Symptom 1:. Event Log: 15 errors in the system log with minor variations as follows:
Event Type:Error
Event Source:dlttape-VRTS
Event Category:None
Event ID:7
Date:8/18/2005
Time:11:20:03 PM
User:N/A
Computer:SBS
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 7 ) in Source ( dlttape-VRTS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: \Device\Tape0.
Data:
0000: 0f 00 18 00 01 00 76 00 ......v.
0008: 00 00 00 00 07 00 04 c0 .......À
0010: 00 01 00 00 9c 00 00 c0 ....œ..À
0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0028: 00 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 ........
0030: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0038: 02 c4 00 00 00 0c 03 00 .Ä......

Symptom 2: Backup job appears to show up properly under the Devices menu.

Symptom 3: Caution light on backup drive blinks amber, drive will not eject the tape. Upon rebooting server, light goes away and drive ejects properly.

Attempted resolution: 1. HP has replaced the tape drive 3 times. 2. HP has had me delete and re-install the tape drive drivers by right clicking the drive, disabling and deleting, exit Veritas, then running tapeinst.exe to reinstall drivers. I then rebooted and it was installed. 3. Different tapes have been tried.

Any and all suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
1.Please check if the device is listed in the hardware compatibility list, if yes please install the latest Veritas drivers from the third link, else install the OEM drivers.

2.Ensure that the device is not connected to a raid controller.
3. Since you have event id 15, please refer to the following technote:

Thank you for your reply, I have made an appointment to go out to the customer's location to further troubleshoot the issue.
1. The backup drive is on the HCL, it is an HP Storageworks DLT VS80 Tape drive. HP tech support has directed me through re-installing the OEM drivers. I will reinstall the drivers as you have suggested by following the Veritas link.
2. The backup drive is connected to a SCSI controller. I am not sure what impact this has on the problem, but please let me know if there is a problem with that.
3. The event log I posted had "Event ID: 7" which was listed 15 times in the event log, not Event ID: 15. I checked the database and did not find very much information on "Event ID: 7" If you know what is causing this event, please let me know.
Thank you again for your help and I will post more information after I return back from troubleshooting at the customer's site.

Hello,
1) -> You dont need to install both the drivers. If your Device is listed as Tested in the HCl then install Latest Veritas Drivers. If it is listed as Compatible then install OEM drivers.

2) It Does matter if the device is attached to a SCSI Controller or a RAID. Please go throught he following Article to understand this better:
Why is it recommended that tape devices should not be connected to RAID controllers?
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/191488.htm

3) Event Ids 7,9,11,and 15 Normally direct us to a Hardware problem. However it depends on the description as well.

We will wait for an Update.
