Upgrade BE2010_R2 server OS from Win2003_R2_SP2_x64 to Win2008_R2

Hello,

I am looking into upgrading (fresh install) the OS on my BackupExec server from Win server 2003 R2 x64 with SP2 to a Win server 2008 R2.

I have done some searching on this and I post here to get my workflow either validated or adjusted.

The BE version is BE2010 R2 (rev. 4164) and most of my backup is Backup2Disk (Exagrid de-dup cluster).

Step 1 - Stop the BE services and copy the CATALOG og DATA folders to some place safe on the network.

Step 2 - Start the services and follow this procedure to copy the BE configuration with BEutil.exe. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH37072

Step 3 - Shut down the server  (delete account in AD etc) and reinstall with Win2008 R2 using the same name and IP adress.

Step 4 - Install BE2010 (separate partition) on the server using the existing BE service account. Skipping most of the post install create job, media-sets etc.

Step 5 - Stop the BE services and paste the CATALOG and DATA folders into x:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\...

Step 6 - Start the BE services and complete the TECH327072 importing the configuration file from Step 2.

Step 6.5 - Do I need to do a catalog of the data?

Step 7 - Restart the server and test the backup and restore (of old files) from the new BE installation.

Now, what I am concerned about is, will this work and is it enough with the CATALOG, DATA folders and the config file from BEutil.exe ?

And are the step-by-step for stopping and starting the services in correct order?

Thanks for your reply

BestRegards

This TN will give you much better idea about migration...

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129826

Step 6 - Start the BE services and complete the TECH327072 importing the configuration file from Step 2.

I think you shouldn't start the services before running beutility.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at the TN and previousely I read this http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH49757 about copying the BEDB from one installation to another. The link I refer to here demands that you have two {edit} I read it again and you dont need two servers {edit} BE servers up and running at the same time to perform the "Copy Database"

But in the TN you (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129826) posted I understand it as you will only need the BEX files for this "Copy Database" function to work.

Do I understand this correct..?

And does this mean that I dont need to use "Copy media server configuration" from BEutil.exe to restore jobs etc.

Sorry if the questions here is a bit basic, but having the backup server up and running again is quite critical ;)))

Point No 12 states that copy database has to be done. (TN 129826).

Simply saying the order will be

Stop BE services including sql.

Copy old DATA and CATALOGS folders to new installation directory.(or all BEX files as mentioned in the TN)

Run BEutil.exe to perform copy database operation.

Once done restart backup exec services.

Thanks...
