User defined selections

I need to turn off file and print sharing and possibly the client for MS Networks.

If I do this I will be unable to see the clients in the browse list.

How does user defined selections work? I was testing it and it appears I can put in a IP address but the documentation suggests not doing that.

What would a typical path look like?
