I have a site that is getting: An unknown error occurred on device “HP 1. V-79-57344-34029 - A hardware error occurred.

Job fails at random places in the backup job. I have changed the resource order, but it still does?

It worked for years, so it is not a HCL problem

Hi there,

Can you get hold of HP Library and Tape Tools and run the diagnostic test against your drive? This will eliminate a hardware error.

The other thing to check is errors on your tapes. Depending on your LTO version, you could be at the end of the lifespan of the tapes. LTO2 are renowned for failing a lot easier than LTO3 or LTO4 for instance.

If there are excessive errors, running the same backup to a new tape will show you whether or not your tapes are the cause.
