VM Backup Speed

Hi,

We are using BackupExec 2010 R3 to backup VMware ESXi via SAN.

We found that there are huge difference in in terms of backup speed (MB/Minute) between different VMs.

In table below, some VM can go as high as 11GB/Min, but some as low as 1.5GB/Min, these slow VMs are stalling the overall job greately.

VM Name Duration Size (MB) MB/Minute Status
vm1 0:48:36 74709.795 1501 Successful
vm2 0:23:11 43457.934 1831 Successful
vm3 0:06:03 18447.9 2985 Successful
vm4 0:22:29 75577.629 3290 Successful
vm5 0:13:24 47250.14 3447 Successful
vm6 0:57:09 214814.747 3672 Successful
vm7 0:21:17 80177.051 3681 Successful
vm8 0:06:45 26007.448 3771 Successful
vm9 0:25:16 102142.172 3950 Successful
vm10 0:14:23 58686.428 3989 Successful
vm11 0:09:45 39884.443 4008 Successful
vm12 0:42:42 178249.755 4078 Successful
vm13 1:42:20 454276.665 4337 Successful
vm14 0:06:29 31437.275 4747 Successful
vm15 0:02:20 13504.668 5818 Successful
vm16 0:14:05 99088.943 6887 Successful
vm17 0:10:52 125660.454 11327

Successful

Does anyone have idea of why some VM are faster than others? How to improve this?

Alex

It can depend on the type of data and number of files.
When a full VMDK backup is created, Backup Exec can 'look into' the VMDK. You can see this stage of the backup when the status "updating catalogs" appears. You can imagine that an Exchange backup (with lots of data in the Exchange database) will take longer to index than a server with only 1 large file (for example).

Also it can be that some of your LUNS or datastores on the SAN are more busy than another. Are all VMs installed on the same type of disks?

Sorry for the late reply.

1. There are 3 datastores (2TB each), but they all belongs to the same 12 disk LUN (6TB).

2. Backup job was not GRT enabled, so indexing should not be an issue.

3. The troubled VM was on Windows XP running Oracle Express, but is basically idle all the time. However, I have turned off the "sync" driver to avoid snapshot problems during backup.
