VMware licensing question

Hi all,

Recently i implemented a backup Exec 2012 solution using the VMware option. As I understood from training I need a License for every ESXi Host which contain VM's included in the backup.

We are running backups against 6 ESX hosts with a lot of VM's using the agent on the Virtual center server. This means that is need 6 agents for VMware and Hyper-V

When i running the build-in license assesment tool it says that i need 1 agent for VMware and Hyper-V.

Is this tool correct? The licensing guide also says one Host, one license. It seems to me that the licensing assesment tool is wrong. But how do i explain that to my Customer?

Regards

Hi Rob,

Very simple...point them to the licensing guide on the link below (or download & print it out):

http://www.emea.symantec.com/beguide/en-GB/files/BE2012_customer_license_guide.pdf

Furthermore, the link below on the Symantec site clearly states what is required from a licensing perspective:

http://www.symantec.com/theme.jsp?themeid=backupexec-virtualization

I don't know why the licensing tool shows you the incorrect details, but make sure it isn't referring to the virtual center server for some reason...it will show the server name it has detected.

Thanks!

Point your customer to the licensing guide:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH178479

1 license per HOST is required.

In theory you can install only 1 license and BE will work fine, but if support finds out you are not complient, they may not help you.

In addtion to the AVVI or Hyper-V licence for each host, you would need an Agent for Applications and Databases licence for each application in each VM.  This means that if you have 2 VM's with SQL Server databases, you would need 2 Agent for Applications and Databases licences.

It might be better for you to get the V-Ray edition licence which charges by the CPU socket and you get an unlimited number of Agent for Applications and Databases licences.  See this blog

i know the v-ray editions and the licensing models. The problem is that the licensing assesment tool output show differents number of licenses than actually needed.

It is a little bit strange that the tool suggest 1 License but that you actually need 6 licenses.
