Veritas Exec 10d on Windows Server 2003

I am having a problem which just won't go away. This happens on Friday weekly full backups only. I have a the media set to append to media overwrite if no appendable media is available.

Veritas continues to tell me that the media is not overwritable when it indeed is.
Ocassionally a reboot will solve the problem but not always.

any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Media Set:

Overwrite Protection Period: None

Append Period. Infinite Allow Append

Device and media Settings: Append to Media overwrite if no appendable media is available

btw it did this just now in the middle of a full backup

I forgot to mention that the actual message I get is

The media in the drive is currently allocated an not available for overwrite operations.

It did just do this in the middle of a full backup 3 hours into the operation.

Sounds like it is filling the first tape and when it looks for the next, thinks the OPP has not expired.

What kind of tape drive do yo have? What kind of media are you using?

How long do you keep each tape? if you use each tape every Monday, I'd et the Global Media Management option to "Partial" and the OPP of the media set to 6 days.

If you do an inventory of all media in the library before the job starts, do all tapes appear in blue?

The tapes are rotated every other week so there are 2 sets of tapes.

The Drive is an HP SorageWorks DAT 40. The Media is DSS4

OK - set the Global option to "Partial" and the media set APP to 13 days

how much data is writen to tape before the "Insert Overwriteable" prompt come up?

Gregory_Bedard

It stops at Byte Count

21,201,097,518

Where do I set the Global option from?

Thanks

The global setting is at Options\Settings\Media Management

If you are getting 21.2 GB on a 20/40 tape, you are indeed filling the tape, and is it looking for a scratch/overwriteable tape to continue.

If this is a standalone drive, about all that you can do is remove the mounted tape and give it a scratch to complete the backup.

You may need to split your backups and run smaller jobs on alternate days, or get a larger capacity tape drive

ok thanks for the feedback.

Is there anyway to improve compression? or is 21 the best I will get?

Also how do I add a scratch?

Thanks again.
